As the world population grows, so does the insatiable demand for energy. India’s metropolitan population centers now consume almost 10 times more energy in 2012 than they did just 27 years ago in 1985 (World Energy News). Most of India’s citizens live in remote rural areas where energy supplies are meager or non-existent, imposing a serious challenge to deliver modern and mechanical means of supplying basic services such as pumping water, cooking stoves, lighting and healthcare services. Of the large population of 1.3 billion people, millions have been moving out to urban population hubs in search of a better life. Although governments are making massive efforts to increase energy supplies, the relentless growth of population more than offsets the current supply capability.

WHEELS Global Foundation, a not for profit 501c3 institution is making serious efforts to deliver resources to assist in relieving this big gap in supply by concentrating on inexpensive self-sustaining, clean energy technologies so that rural areas are not constrained by dependence on scarce fossil resources.

The growth of a nation and its prosperity is directly proportional to the amount of per capita energy the country uses.

In the United States

  • Primary dependence is on fossil fuels such as gas and crude oil.
  • USA is marching headlong into becoming an energy independent producer nation, by reducing the need to import fossil fuels.
  • The US is accelerating the implementation of clean energy such as wind, solar and biofuels poised to reduce the dependence on imported oil and develop multiple renewable energy sources.

In India

  • A major shortage of energy in all segments of Indian society are choking the economic growth engine of the country.
  • A concerted effort by the Indian government to implement clean and renewable energy to supplement current fossil based fuels is underway on a massive scale. The huge and growing rural population places severe challenges to the supply chain of clean energy and needs outside help to meeting demand.

How is WHEELS helping to meet this challenge?

Current Projects

  • Research: WHEELS is collaborating with advanced educational institutes to introduce practical energy producing products in their research labs, suited to harsh rural environments in India. Several MOUs are signed or in the works, with IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay and IIT Madras that will result in cooperative efforts to deliver simple and robust products based on renewable energy use.

    IIT Gandhinagar

  • Partnerships: By partnering with commercial enterprises specializing in supplying clean energy products, WHEELS is helping deliver simple products to rural areas where electricity was unheard of just a few years ago. Included in the current lineup are solar lamps and solar cookers.

Clean Energy Technologies

  • Clean Energy – which encompasses diverse technologies such as wind, solar, geothermal, ocean tidal, and ocean current – continues to be an area of intense activity and is expected to contribute increasingly to the energy in India.

Electric Grid Modernization

  • Both in the US and in India, efforts are underway to modernize the Transmission and Distribution grid. Technologies that reduce dependence on transmission lines, are being incorporated using smart grids and off-grids where most of the energy is locally produced  using solar or wind resources. , that provide real-time sensing, monitoring, and management of energy consumption at the point of use, routing of power, and the capability to link distributed micro-energy generation and storage.

How You Can Help

  • Donate: To propagate the implementation of these affordable technologies, we seek your help in improving the lives of rural populations, and bring a smile to a child who can read at home with the aid of a solar lamp, or the homemaker who can cook a meal for her hungry family, we need your generous donation.

Just $25 a month will pay for a solar cooker and food for a family of four. A $25 donation will pay for a solar lamp for one family.
