Traditionally not-for-organizations have depended primarily on institutional grants or other forms of charitable giving. However, a new generation of philanthropists prefers to "invest for social impact" rather than to "donate for charity". They are active donors whose role surpasses that of check writers. They leverage their resources to achieve social change that is both scalable and sustainable. As a result, their contribution is meant to go beyond providing temporary "band-aid" solutions and work toward the 'eradication' of a disease, hunger, or poverty and to achieve measurable social goals.

Objectives for the webinar:
1. Models for scaling up charitable efforts, especially with COVID-pandemic experiences.
2. Building organizational structures for delivering services: Collaborating with multiple NGOs.
3. Strategies for fundraising for scaling Social Transformation.
4. Strategies for recruiting and training volunteers and service personnel.
5. Roles and responsibilities of the Board of Non-profit organizations Post COVID.

Emerging Technologies for Social Good

A Dialog Among:

Dr. Bharat Balasubramanian, ex-CTO of Daimler Benz and Head of the School for

Advanced Automotive Engineering, Alabama

Mr. Anup Wadhwa, TD - AIA Foundation for Smart Manufacturing

AND

Mr. Harish Hande, SELCO India and Ramon Magsaysay Awardee

India’s green revolution started in 1965 to achieve self-reliance in food grain production by encouraging farmers to adopt modern methods and technology by using high yielding variety seeds, tractors, irrigation facilities, pesticides, and fertilizers. However, in hindsight, there have been issues that have arisen pertaining to health implications and sustainability.

Now, 55 years later, new and emerging technologies like autonomous self-driving vehicles, Artificial Intelligence, data mining and data analytics, space-based weather forecasting and soil monitoring, widespread applications for solar energy, 5G communications, drones, robotics, and tracking produce from ‘farm to table’ with Blockchain technology are all expected to be disruptive. These technologies will impact food packaging, processing, and rural development and the agriproducts supply chain. During this COVID-19 crisis, people have discovered the convenience of ordering everything from groceries and restaurant food to household supplies and clothing by simply using their smartphones. These emerging technologies are bound to further change consumer behaviour, and ‘industrialize’ rural livelihoods by creating new e-markets, and e-distribution.

As an example, in India 66% of its population lives in rural areas. Similarly, a large percentage of population in developing countries is rural.
1. How can these emerging technologies be adopted to serve the rural population?
2. What skills will be required to adapt to this fast-changing world?
3. How are these disruptive technologies touching our lives today?
4. What sort of applications are expected for these technologies?
5. How should education and skill building be re-oriented?
6. What are its implications for healthcare, climate change and sustainability?
7. How can we celebrate rural communities as providers of essential resources for the rest of the world and not as recipients of largesse?

In India, 66% of its population lives in rural areas. Likewise, a large percentage of population in developing nations is also rural. There is also a general consensus that access to Quality healthcare is a basic right of citizens in rural communities. Yet, such expectations are hardly met in rural India. Only 23 of 32000 public health centres, PHCs meet the health certification standards of the Govt. Most of them without a professional medical doctor in resident. What can technology do to alleviate such critical deficiencies in rural life in India and other developing countries? WHEELS has assembled a group of experts to address this issue in a health panel to be moderated by Arjun Malhotra, distinguished IIT alumni, technology innovator and Philanthropist.

Dr. Shashi Tharoor's vast experience at the United Nations including his service as Under Secretary, many years of experience in Global Affairs as a parliamentarian, service as Minister of State for External Affairs in the Government of India, and a commentator and author of many books offers us an opportunity to explore his views for the post-COVID world and the role for the United Nations. His new book The New World Disorder And the Indian Imperative, co-authored with Samir Saran, President of Observer Research Foundation (ORF), one of Asia's most influential think tanks, is a crucial study on the current state of chaos in international politics and identifies India's imminent role, as a non-hegemonic global power, in scripting an equitable ethic for a new international order.
